What Is A Surgical Excision?

Surgical excision is one of the most common procedures for treating skin cancer and other skin growths. In this procedure, Dr. Payne will remove the unknown or malignant growth along with some of the bordering tissue. A sample of the excised tissue may then be sent to a pathologist for additional testing to determine if the cancer is showing signs of spreading to healthy tissue. If so, a follow-up treatment may be needed to eliminate the rest of the cancerous skin cells. If you're concerned about signs of cancer or precancer, schedule a consultation at Flourish Dermatology And Aesthetics in New Orleans, LA to learn if surgical excision is the best treatment for your case.

How Do You Perform Surgical Excisions?

To start with, local anesthesia will be administered to the treatment location to reduce any discomfort during the surgical excision. Prior to the surgery, Dr. Payne will thoroughly clean the area to be treated and administer the predetermined local anesthesia. The cancerous tissue is then cut away with a scalpel through horizontal incisions made around the growth and surrounding tissue. Once the excision is complete, the wound will be closed with sutures. A solution will then be applied to the treatment area to prevent bleeding before a sterile bandage is placed over it to prevent infection. To help with recovery, Dr. Payne may also prescribe an antibiotic in certain cases.

Dr. Payne was amazing! She was very knowledgeable, informative, personable, and welcoming. I’m very much looking forward to my next visit to have my moles removed. She was more well versed in some of my skincare issues that other dermatologists had previously dismissed. I highly recommend her, and plan on referring all of my friends to her practice.
