What Is Eczema?

Dermatitis (i.e., eczema) is a label used for a variety of inflammatory skin conditions typically caused by allergies or an overactive immune system. These conditions can result in irritated, very itchy skin patches and plaques that can be red or hyperpigmented in color. Eczema can occur anywhere on your body, including the hands, neck, extremities, face, or other areas. Atopic dermatitis is the most common form of eczema and is usually due to an exaggerated response to skin irritation. This condition is genetic and often starts in childhood, though it can also appear in adulthood. The triggers of eczema can include underlying genetic predisposition, seasonal changes, as well as environmental factors such as allergens or irritant chemicals that come into contact with the skin. At Flourish Dermatology And Aesthetics in New Orleans, LA, Dr. Payne will perform a thorough skin exam to diagnose your skin dermatitis — so that a precise treatment plan can be created and carried out.

Causes

Eczema or dermatitis can be triggered by a combination of factors, including environmental triggers, immune system overactivity, skin barrier defects, and irritants. Specifically, genetics can play a significant role in eczema because specific genes may disrupt the skin barrier, causing you to have very sensitive skin. If you have relatives who suffer from asthma, allergies, hay fever, or eczema, you may have a greater chance of developing skin conditions like eczema.

Symptoms

This condition is frequently characterized by red, hyperpigmented, flaky, or scaly, itchy skin, in addition to persistent and repeated rash flares. In most cases, the skin will start to feel itchy before a rash shows up. Many patients develop patches of skin that are continuously itchy, dry, or cracked. These spots may appear anywhere but largely happen on the face, neck, chest, legs, or hands. In kids, eczema patches are common in the inner creases of the elbows and knees. When itchy skin is scratched, dry spots and open sores can develop and may become infected. More serious symptoms can include pus-filled blisters or a yellow to brown crust growing over eczema spots. These symptoms can indicate a bacterial or fungal infection, and early treatment is essential.

How Do You Treat Eczema?

There are a number of effective treatments for eczema, many of which involve over-the-counter or prescription-strength medications and lotions. Topical steroid ointments and creams can be used, as well as oral antihistamines, to help alleviate symptoms. Systemic prescription medications, such as oral or injectable immunomodulators, may be indicated in patients with moderate to severe eczema to calm down the immune response. In more severe cases, Dr. Payne may recommend ultraviolet light therapy or laser therapy to help treat the affected region(s).
