Eczema

Chronic inflammatory skin condition causing dry, itchy, red, inflamed patches. Managed with moisturizers, topical steroids, and trigger avoidance.

What is Eczema

Dermatitis is a label used for a variety of inflammatory skin conditions typically caused by allergies or an overactive immune system. These conditions can result in irritated, very itchy skin patches and plaques that can be red or hyperpigmented in color. Eczema can occur anywhere on your body, including the hands, neck, extremities, face, or other areas.
Atopic dermatitis is the most common form of eczema and is usually due to an exaggerated response to skin irritation. This condition is genetic and often starts in childhood, though it can also appear in adulthood. The triggers of eczema can include underlying genetic predisposition, seasonal changes, as well as environmental factors such as allergens or irritant chemicals that come into contact with the skin. At Flourish Dermatology And Aesthetics in New Orleans, LA, Dr. Payne will perform a thorough skin exam to diagnose your skin dermatitis — so that a precise treatment plan can be created and carried out.

How do we treat Eczema

There are a number of effective treatments for eczema, many of which involve over-the-counter or prescription-strength medications and lotions. Topical steroid and non-steroidal ointments and creams can be used, as well as oral antihistamines, to help alleviate symptoms. Systemic prescription medications, such as oral or injectable immunomodulators, may be indicated in patients with moderate to severe eczema to calm down the immune response. In more severe cases, Dr. Payne may recommend laser therapy to help treat the affected region(s).

After Treatment

Proper treatment reduces itching, redness, and how often you flare up while helping your skin barrier heal. You’ll likely sleep better, feel more comfortable, and enjoy a much better quality of life.
