How do we treat Laser Hair Removal

When you visit for your laser hair removal appointment, we will start by having you lie back in one of our private treatment rooms as the areas of your body that are being treated are washed to remove any oil, dirt, moisturizers, or other products. During the procedure, Dr. Payne will stretch out the skin to create a clear pathway between the root of the hair follicle and the laser. The energy from the laser will target and destroy the follicle, which prevents it from growing again. Typically, you will need 6 – 12 consecutive treatments every 4 – 6 weeks for optimal results. Your appointments are spaced out in order to allow the treated areas time to recover. This also allows time for hair follicles in the dormant phase to change to the phase of active growth so they can be treated. The Aerolase ® Nd:YAG laser used at Flourish Dermatology And Aesthetics is able to target only the hair follicle, preserving the skin in the surrounding treatment area. It also uses a higher wavelength of light that is suitable for pale and dark skin tones. The laser can also lighten dark spots from prior razor bumps and ingrown hairs.

After your laser hair removal session, you may feel a sensation like a mild sunburn around the treatment location. When you get home after your appointment, we suggest soothing creams or cold packs to treat any mild discomfort. You should be fine to resume all normal activities, but we advise avoiding strenuous activities and sun exposure for at least a day while your skin recovers.

After Treatment

Repeated waxing or shaving can be expensive and can also cause skin irritation. Frequently Asked Questions

Most patients need a series of approximately 6–8 treatments for optimal hair reduction. Because laser treatments are most effective when hairs are in the active growth phase, multiple sessions are necessary. Some patients may require additional treatments or periodic maintenance depending on the treatment area, hair density, hormones, and individual response.

Aerolase uses 1064 nm Nd laser technology, making it an excellent option for a wide range of skin tones, including melanin-rich and darker skin. Treatment settings are customized based on your skin type, hair characteristics, and treatment area.

Laser hair removal works best on hair containing darker pigment, such as black or dark brown hair. Blonde, red, gray, and white hairs contain less melanin and generally respond poorly or may not respond to laser hair removal.

Aerolase is designed to provide a more comfortable laser hair removal experience. Most patients describe brief warmth or a mild snapping sensation during treatment. Discomfort varies depending on the treatment area and individual sensitivity, but treatments are generally well tolerated.

Yes. Shaving is the preferred method of hair removal between treatments. Avoid waxing, tweezing, threading, or other methods that remove the hair from the root because the laser needs the hair follicle to be present for effective treatment.

Laser hair removal provides long-term or permanent hair reduction, rather than a guarantee that every hair will be permanently eliminated. Hair that does return is often finer, lighter, and less noticeable. Periodic maintenance treatments may be needed.

Treatment intervals depend on the area being treated and its natural hair-growth cycle. Sessions are generally scheduled several weeks apart, with your treatment schedule adjusted as hair growth slows.

Yes. Laser hair removal can be particularly helpful for patients who experience recurrent ingrown hairs, razor bumps, or pseudofolliculitis barbae. By reducing hair growth, treatments can decrease the cycle of shaving, inflammation, and ingrown hairs.

You will typically be instructed to shave the treatment area before your appointment and avoid waxing, tweezing, or threading beforehand. Follow any additional pre-treatment instructions provided by Flourish to help minimize irritation and ensure the area can be treated safely.

Treated hairs typically begin to shed following treatment, and you should notice progressively less hair growth as you complete your treatment series. Because hairs grow in different cycles, results build gradually rather than occurring after a single session.
