Microneedling

Tiny needles create controlled micro-injuries to stimulate collagen and improve scars, pores, and texture. Often combined with serums.

What is Microneedling

Microneedling, otherwise known as collagen induction therapy, is a skin rejuvenating treatment that has become increasingly popular in recent years. This exciting nonsurgical treatment uses an array of small needles to create tiny channels in the skin’s surface, triggering the body’s natural production of collagen and elastin, two proteins that help to improve the health and appearance of the skin. At Flourish Dermatology And Aesthetics, Dr. Lauren Payne is pleased to offer microneedling as its own treatment or combined with other skin solutions (such as serum or platelet-rich plasma treatments) to enhance their effects. Contact our New Orleans, LA skin care practice to learn more about the benefits of SKINPEN(R) or Lutronic Genius RF Microneedling microneedling and how this treatment can be customized for your own skin concerns and goals.

How do we treat Microneedling

Microneedling can be performed in around 30 – 60 minutes and typically requires no recovery time afterward, making it an easy treatment to slot into your schedule. To begin, your face will be cleaned of any makeup, oils, or debris. Dr. Payne may apply numbing cream or local anesthesia to minimize any discomfort caused by the procedure. The microneedling handpiece will be gently rolled over your skin, creating micro-injuries as it passes. Most patients report little to no pain during the treatment, and some say it feels relaxing. After the microneedling is performed, a treatment, such as PRP (platelet-rich plasma) or a serum with a brightening serum infusion, may be applied so the nutrients can penetrate deeper into the skin. A moisturizer selected for your skin type will then be massaged in along with sun protection, as the treated skin will be sensitive after your appointment. Following the procedure, you might have light swelling and redness for about one day, but this should fade naturally. It can take about 1 – 2 months as the collagen and elastin levels increase before you notice visible changes in the appearance and health of your skin. Depending on your skin’s condition and your own aesthetic goals, you may need to plan for 3 – 6 follow-up sessions spaced four to six weeks apart to get the full results you want.

After Treatment

Microneedling stimulates collagen to improve scars, pores, and skin texture. It has minimal downtime and can make your skin look firmer, smoother, and more youthful.

Frequently Asked Questions

A topical numbing cream is applied before treatment to keep you comfortable. Most patients describe the treatment as mild pressure, vibration, or a scratching sensation rather than pain.

For best results, we typically recommend a series of 3–6 treatments spaced about 4–6 weeks apart. The number of sessions will depend on your concerns, such as acne scars, uneven texture, enlarged pores, fine lines, or overall skin rejuvenation.

Most patients experience redness, sensitivity, and mild swelling for 1–3 days, similar to a mild sunburn. The skin may also feel dry, tight, or slightly rough for several days as it heals.

Your skin may look brighter and more refreshed within the first few weeks, but microneedling works by stimulating your skin’s natural healing and collagen-remodeling process. Improvements in texture, fine lines, and acne scars develop gradually, with results continuing to improve over several weeks to months.

Microneedling can improve the appearance of acne scars, uneven skin texture, enlarged pores, fine lines, mild skin laxity, and overall skin quality. Your treatment can be customized based on the concerns you would like to address.

Yes. Microneedling is an excellent option for melanin-rich skin because it stimulates collagen without relying on heat to target pigment. Appropriate treatment settings and aftercare are still important to minimize irritation and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

We do not recommend trying to duplicate professional microneedling treatments at home. Professional devices allow for controlled, sterile, and precise treatment depths based on the area being treated and your individual skin concerns. At-home devices may increase the risk of irritation, infection, scarring, or discoloration when used improperly.

Treatment may need to be postponed if you have an active skin infection, significant inflammatory acne in the treatment area, open wounds, or certain conditions that interfere with normal healing or blood clotting. Your medical history and skin will be evaluated before treatment to make sure microneedling is appropriate for you.

We recommend avoiding makeup for at least 24 hours after treatment and following your provided post-treatment skincare instructions while the skin barrier recovers.

For the first several days, avoid exfoliating acids, retinoids, scrubs, and other potentially irritating products. Avoid excessive heat, sweating, and direct sun exposure immediately after treatment, and use broad-spectrum sunscreen daily while your skin heals.
